In about 55 Minutes, the greatest sporting event in the world begins. Problem is, most Americans don't give two flying fucks about soccer.
But not me. I love soccer.
Here's the reason, if nothing else, Americans should watch the World Cup and cheer for their team: the world wants us to fail. I love giving countries like France and Iran (and well, every nation in the world) something to recall why they are so inferior (no, not their lack of deodorant and crisp non-regional diction). No, we don't have the likes of Ronaldinho or Thierry Henry, but we do have the best goalkeeper (Kasey Keller) in the world and damn near the best defense.
Going into the tournament, the United States is ranked the fifth best team in the world. I'm not a big fan of seeing our country fail at anything (yes, I am a glutton for punishment), that's why I'm rooting for Us. You should root for Us. You should watch Us.
1980 was the last sporting miracle that capture the heart of the nation. 2006 seems high time for another Miracle.
Joga Bonito USA. Win it for the Red, White, and Blue.
